GE formed a strategic partnership with a third-party client to conduct research focused on the development of a user persona and a journey map. The primary objective was to gain a deeper understanding of how the Worker Tracking List was utilized and identify areas for improvement. The ultimate goal was to create a digitized version of the list that would enhance accountability and visibility of workers and vendors. By digitizing this process, the aim was to enhance safety measures for all workers in the factories that rely on the Worker Tracking List. This initiative reflects GE's commitment to prioritizing worker safety and leveraging technology to optimize operational processes.

Our foremost objective in this project was to enhance the safety of workers in various factories through the implementation of a digitized solution. The prevailing issue we aimed to address was the reliance on paper-based Tracking lists when assigning workers or vendors to specific machines for maintenance or repair tasks. This manual approach introduced significant potential for human errors in tracking and documentation. Such errors not only jeopardized worker safety but also had the potential to place lives at risk. It was clear that a digitized solution was essential to mitigate these risks and ensure accurate and easily understandable worker tracking records, ultimately fostering a safer working environment for all involved.

During our thorough workout sessions, we gained valuable insights into the daily challenges faced by our primary persona, the Maintenance Manager. We discovered that their stress levels can skyrocket, especially during critical emergencies at the plant. Recognizing the significance of addressing this pain point, we focused our efforts on developing solutions to alleviate the pressure and enhance their ability to effectively manage such situations. For instance:

  • During an outage at the plant, there is a reliance on a paper-based Worker Tracking List by Operation leads to track the workers assigned to various machines. This manual process often resulted in challenges, including the risk of misplacing or misinterpreting the paper, causing delays and confusion.
  • Worker tracking Lists information sometimes is very hard to read due to sloppy handwriting, wrong fields being filled out, large signatures and overall messy system.
  • The physical nature of the Worker Tracking Lists (WTLs), prone to loss, damage, water exposure, and smudged ink, posed significant challenges and hindered accessibility.
  • The incomplete or inaccurate filling out of Worker Tracking Lists (WTLs) poses a severe safety risk, as it can lead to improper use of the document and potentially endanger lives.

The pressing need for a comprehensive and improved solution to ensure worker safety and accountability was evident. With a shared mission to protect lives, our team embarked on a determined journey to develop a solution that would not only enhance the safety of workers but also improve the overall accountability of work performed.

With a deeper understanding of the problem at hand, our collaboration with the exceptional Interaction Designer, Izhar Buendia, propelled us into developing crucial elements for the project. Together, we created the Persona, Journey map, and a storyboard, which vividly portrayed the user's experience and highlighted the need for a digitized solution. These artifacts proved instrumental in effectively conveying our vision to the client, fostering a clear understanding of the target audience and the underlying purpose of implementing a digital solution tailored to their specific needs.

Building upon the insights gained from the Persona, Journey map, and storyboard, our next step involved translating those ideas into tangible designs. To kickstart the process, we began with initial sketches and basic wireframes, capturing the essence of the envisioned solution. These preliminary visual representations allowed us to explore and refine the concepts further, setting the stage for the subsequent stages of development.

Taking the wireframes as a foundation, I took the lead in transforming them into fully designed screens. Collaborating closely with the Interaction Designer and aligning with Apple's Design Guidelines, we expanded and enriched the user experience. By incorporating our distinctive IoT brand colors, specifically Predix, the screens came to life, enabling the entire team and our client to visualize the potential of this immersive experience. This collaborative effort brought clarity and excitement, reinforcing our shared vision and propelling the project forward with a renewed sense of purpose and direction.

During our iterative design process, we recognized the need to simplify the user experience and prioritize ease of use. Understanding the potentially stressful situations that workers could face, we aimed to create a streamlined, intuitive process that could be completed in just a few simple steps. Our focus shifted towards eliminating unnecessary features such as calling, commenting, or emailing within the app, as these functionalities were not essential for the core purpose of the tool. By implementing a straightforward 1,2,3 step experience, we aimed to provide clarity and efficiency, allowing workers to quickly and easily log in, locate their names, and complete the required sign-off. This intentional simplicity aimed to alleviate any additional stressors and ensure a smooth and seamless user experience, even in challenging circumstances.

The culmination of our efforts led us to conduct two pilot tests with the workers at the plant, an experience that left us filled with excitement and a sense of fulfillment. Witnessing firsthand how the workers seamlessly utilized the digitized solution, effortlessly filling out their information, underscored the significance of creating a user-friendly tool tailored specifically for their needs. Being present within the plant environment provided a profound perspective on the dedication and sacrifices made by these workers, who put their lives on the line to ensure our everyday conveniences, even as simple as turning on a light switch. This humbling experience served as a powerful reminder of the immense responsibility we held in designing a solution that not only simplified their tasks but also prioritized their safety and well-being.

As part of our journey, we documented our visit to the plant through a captivating video. It was an incredible experience to witness firsthand the impact of our digital solution in potentially saving lives and transforming the operations of our client. Creating something with such a profound impact was both gratifying and inspiring. The video served as a testament to the remarkable journey we embarked upon, capturing the essence of our mission and the positive transformation we aimed to bring about. It was a testament to the power of digital innovation and its potential to create a lasting and meaningful impact on the lives of workers and the success of our client.
